Pork Checkoff investment helps add sizzle and spice to pork offerings at Famous Dave’s state fair site

Famous Dave’s and Minnesota pork producers sizzle at this year’s Minnesota State Fair with the introduction of the Butt and Belly BBQ Pork Sandwich and Chocolate Covered Pig Lickers.

Pork producers invested Pork Checkoff funding into the promotional signage and marketing associated with the introduction of the two original pork items created by Chef Charlie Torgerson. Torgerson, and his partner Randy Jernberg, own four Famous Dave’s restaurants, including the facility on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. Each fair season, they launch at least new menu items.

The novelty of this year’s Butt & Belly BBQ Sandwich and Chocolate Covered Pig Lickers caught the media’s attention prior to the fair. Now with the fair in full-swing, consumers are enjoying the innovative and unique taste of pork. Once again, Chef Torgerson demonstrates pork’s versatility with this year’s new Famous Dave’s menu items.

Torgerson, a National Pork Board Celebrated Pork Chef and Minnesota Pork Board Taste of Elegance participant, enthusiastically promotes pork on behalf of the state’s pork producers and the Pork Checkoff. 

The Butt & Belly BBQ Sandwich encompasses brined, slow cooked, smoked pork belly and butt that is finished on the grill for added crispiness and then served on a bun with pickled jalapeno red onion, shredded cabbage and chipotle BBQ sauce. Chocolate-covered smoked bacon, sprinkled with sea salt describes the Chocolate Covered Pig Lickers.

The sandwich sells for $6 and the Pig Lickers are four for $5. Famous Dave’s is located southwest of the State Fair Grandstand near Chambers Street and Dan Patch Avenue.

The Minnesota Pork Board engaged the services of Lime Valley Advertising of Mankato to create the graphics seen on the Famous Dave’s state fair restaurant signage and the restaurant employee T-shirts.
